Building Discipline – there’s a popular myth when it comes to self-discipline… You either have it or you don’t.

All you have to do is bring up the topic, and you will commonly hear people say, “I wish I had some of that!” or “Oh, I’m just not a very disciplined person.”

The truth is that while some people are, indeed, naturally more prone to self-discipline, anyone can develop this trait, and everyone benefits by building a little more.

Self-discipline is rooted in your values. When you know what matters most to you, it’s much easier to prioritize your long-term benefits over short-term indulgences. Discipline demands that you sacrifice what you want right now in order to work for something greater, and many people don’t have a clear and compelling understanding of what that “something greater” might be.

That’s why it’s essential that you clarify what’s most important to you and remind yourself of it every day.

Once you do that, it’s simply a matter of making one choice at a time. With each temptation, ask yourself, “Is this moving me toward or away from what matters?” When you frame it like that, the choice becomes easier.

So, let’s put this to rest once and for all…

Self-discipline is something you learn, not something you’re born with.

With a little focus and a few well-crafted habits, you can do, have or be anything that you want. You just have to build it, one choice at a time
